lovely days in the city.

Posted in Uncategorized by moesker007 on September 23, 2009

I’ve had off work the last three days, which has been quite nice. As much as I love Apple, I worked too many hours the last pay period so these last few days have been great. I’ve mostly just been tromping around the city window shopping, eating cupcakes, going to coffee shops, doing homework, gawking over dogs, etc.

Autumn was in town on Tuesday, so Sara, her and myself went out for dinner. We went to Cafeteria, it was very tasty. I got a salmon BLT that was super good and a peach arnold palmer (emma, you know I only think of you when drinking such things). She was only in town for the night, so she flew home today.

I’ve got a large pile of laundry to do, I should really get around to that. Things are in the works for the back-to-MCAD switch. I’m currently waiting to find out what my financial aid package is going to look like; hopefully it’s good. Allie is busy sailing around the world and such but I’ve been looking a bit at apartments in MPLS and I think I want to live around Longfellow by the river. Once Allie get’s back on the boat I can talk a bit more with her about things, but I’m excited either way.

I guess that’s all for now…

view from the dorm.

The last few days I’ve just been working and going to school, nothing too out of the ordinary. Class is slightly better, at least I’m making it more interesting. Now that I’ve decided to go back to MCAD I feel like I need to make the best out of the semester I’m here, so I’m staying positive and making things good.

I had to go to Governors Island for the Dutch design festival, New Island Festival. I was somewhat not looking forward to it, but once I got there my mood quickly changed. Governors Island in general is a great place to visit, the ferry is free and departs on the hour. I went Friday morning on one of the first ferries over there, it was a perfect morning. When I got to the Island, things were just opening up and it wasn’t crowded at all. The festival was set up in different houses around the island, with designers and artists each having a house to exhibit in. I was really interested in 2012 Architecten, they’re an architecture firm that designs almost purely with recycled items. Check out the site, specifically their images, to see some of the stuff they’ve done. I spent a good chunk of time on the Island watching some documentaries about their design process and viewing images of their work. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience.

Today, Sara’s friend Lara came to the city. She goes to school in Syracuse, so it’s a fairly quick bus ride here. We met her at the bus station around noon (after first getting Starbucks of course, if you didn’t know, this city runs on corporate coffee).  We just tromped around and got lunch, then I went off to work. Sara, Silvia, Lara and I went to get Thai for dinner, then went over to Magnolia Cupcakes for dessert. It was CRAZY busy, even though it was 11:30 at night.

I guess that’s all for now, check out the flickr for some snaps from the New Island Festival.

I haven’t updated in a while, mostly because I’ve been waiting for all sorts of web server stuff to switch over with my domain since I switched over to wordpress. Anyways, nothing too exciting has been happening. I’ve been working a ton and obviously going to classes.

Sara got us a good opportunity last weekend to work Ra’mon Lawrence’s fashion show. He’s a designer on the current season of Project Runway. We mostly just helped with backstage stuff like taping shoes, steaming, organizing, etc. I worked the door for a while but we both got to go in and watch the show when it started. Some of his pieces were pretty great, others not so much. It was a fun time and good experience, something I wouldn’t mind doing agian.

Work at Apple is great, as usual. I still love Apple products, I still love the Company, and working at the store here on 14th street is superb. I’ve got almost 40 hours in the past week and a half, so I’ve definitely been busy.

The only thing that I’m not sure about is school. Last year, Parsons seemed like the right choice. Now, I’m second guessing that decision. The classes I need to take before graduation here are basically things I’ve already learned from MCAD. I don’t want to waste time taking classes about concepts that I’m already very familiar with. I’m in a “you don’t know what you got til it’s gone” type of situation. I miss the small classes and community of MCAD, something I took for granted while there. The BBA program here at Parsons is basically just a larger, worse structured version of the BS program at MCAD. I’m also not enjoying my living situation, it works as a place to sleep, but I want more than that. I don’t like sharing a room with 3 people or a bathroom and kitchen (stove top and counters, no oven) with 5 people. I’ve been weighing the pro’s and con’s of moving back to Minneapolis, and have decided that I’m going to return to MCAD next semester (spring).

Talk about a hard decision.

It’s going to be hard to leave NYC behind though. I truly love the city. I’m also worried about what is going to happen with Apple, as I don’t know if it’s going to be possible to transfer back to a Minneapolis store. It’ll be nice to have Minneapolis friends around again, I miss them all.

Hopefully things will work out, they always do.

everyone must learn this.

block away from Chelsea Market so I love break when I’m able to get
some delicious grub.

I’ve also finished my first week of school, phew. Unfortunately the
classes are really basic, hopefully I made the right choice to move
here. I definitely love the city, and hopefully school will get better
next semester. I’m also not convinced I like my living situation, I
guess it’ll work for now.

Jordan came to visit from Thursday through Sunday! We mosly just
tromped around Sara and I’s neighborhoods; it was great having her here.

Otherwise, nothing too exciting has been happening. I want a French
Bulldog, they are so cute. If I were in Minneapolis still I’d be
getting one and a nicer apt…oh well, someday.
